History wonks might also like to read a review of the 2014 Conference, which I think presages both the demise of the ASA and the revised scope of the current conference, here:

The 2016 Call for Papers is Out

The Call for Papers for the 2016 Researcher-to-Reader Conference has been issued, inviting proposals for presentations and workshops.  The call is a bit late this year, hitting the streets in August and asking for responses by early September, but we hope to improve on the timing next year!   This is a great opportunity for presenters and workshop chairs to put forward their ideas and get on the programme for the conference.

You can download the PDF via the link below, or view the Call for Papers page on the Conference website: https://r2rconf.com/call-for-papers/

Conference Chairman has Article in Learned Publishing

The Chairman of the R2R Conference, Mark Carden, has had an article on publishing career paths published in the July 2015 edition of the ALPSP journal Learned Publishing.

The abstract is below:

The job titles and career paths of people transitioning between academia and scholarly publishing, and of those who are progressing within their publishing careers, has been little studied and lacks accepted frameworks, ‘route-maps’, and taxonomies. Much of the work done to date provides merely a ‘snapshot’ of the current demographics of the publishing workforce at particular moment, and tends not to offer insight into pathways, trajectories, or momentum. This preliminary survey, involving around 150 scholarly publishers, reveals insights into job titles, progressions, and transitions, and exposes some of the reasons for transitions between academia and publishing. The analysis suggests that these transitions and career paths can be systematically studied and documented, for use both by individuals considering their own careers, and by planners and managers in academic institutions and scholarly publishing organizations.

Making Sure that the ASA Conference Lives On

ASA 2015 LogoWhile the ASA Executive Committee, Secretary General and Members work on the potential dissolution of the Association, we are also working on ensuring that the Conference lives on. This means figuring out how the Conference can be re-established with a new organisation, and can begin to build a new brand, while also acknowledging its origins.

Everyone is working to make this happen, and its great to see the various issues getting resolved.  With luck around the end of this month (June 2015) or in early July we should have it all worked out.

Arranging a venue for the R2R Conference

BMA House - Snow RoomWe visited the BMA yesterday (17 June 2015) to talk about holding the 2016 R2R Conference at their excellent venue, following mostly positive responses from delegates about the 2015 ASA Conference. Excited to hear about the new WifFi system that has been installed, and about the recruitment of a new head chef – agreed that fish pie would not be on the menu for 2016.  Less excited about the costs of the venue, but it may turn out to be affordable.
